Nathan watched the door slam closed.

Zeke had kissed him.

Which would have been welcome if he hadn't in the middle of a full-blown OCD episode. At least he'd have the meds soon enough. They might help forestall his compulsion storm.

He managed to get up slowly, collecting the dirty plates, and hobbled in the direction of the kitchen. He reached the doorway and stopped, shocked.

The place was an absolute mess.

The sink was filled with dirty dishes, and every surface was covered with junk: plates and pots and pans and small appliances in dangerous piles.

It's not safe.

He had to do something about it.

He set his own plate down and started in on the dirty dishes with a bucket of clean water he found on the counter, cleaning them one at a time and setting them on the floor. There were too many to lay singly. He thought he could deal with short stacks, maybe two or three high.

"What are you doing?"

Nathan turned to find Andy standing there, his arms crossed over his chest. "Where the hell have you been?"

Andy shrugged. "I thought it was better if you met this guy alone. Now come on, put that plate down."

"I can't. I have to clean these up."

Andy frowned. "You don't have to do this, Nathan."

"It's not safe."

"You can get past this. You've done it before. Look, these dishes have been here for how long?"

Nathan stopped his scrubbing just long enough to look around. "Weeks? Months?"

"And did anything bad happen?"

"I don't know. I wasn't here." He washed another dish using the soap and a bottle of water by the sink.

"That's right. You weren't. Zeke is still alive. What if you hadn't come along?"

How the hell did Andy know Zeke's name? "I don't know."

"Isn't it likely he would have been just fine?"

"Maybe. But..."

"... It's not safe. You already told me that."

Nathan nodded miserably.

"Listen, you know that's just the broken part of your brain talking, right?"

Nathan did know it, but he needed to scratch that itch. It was bad this time. What if he did nothing and something happened to Zeke? How would he feel then?

Andy came to stand next to him. "What did Dr. Kapoor tell you?"

Nathan closed his eyes. "To face my fear. To see if something bad really does happen. I can't..."

"Can't or won't?" Andy asked.

"Why did you leave me alone?" Nathan asked. Maybe Andy didn't like him anymore.

"I never left you."

"Fucking liar." He turned his back on his friend and resumed his scrubbing.

"Suit yourself."

Nathan was going through water quickly. He'd have to go find more or melt some snow.

When he looked back, Andy was gone.
